LAST DAYS

LAST DAYS

VATICAN, ROME

ITALY

The last days of the pontificate of John Paul II and those immediately following his death, on April 5th, 2005, were epochal days which have seen millions of pilgrims arriving in Rome to pay tribute to him and to participate in celebrations that culminated with his funerals.

These images retrace those moments, from the last appearance at the window of St. Peter's Square, on March 30th, during which the Pope was unable to speak to the crowd because of the worsening of his health, until the day of the funeral, on April 8th, with the participation of 300,000 people in Piazza della Conciliazione and nearby streets, at the presence of more than 200 official delegations from governments around the world.
